‘Sajnee,' Shahabaz Aman's new album of Malayalam ghazals, contains some pleasing songs.
There are eight tracks in the album, seven of which have been composed by Shahabaz. He has sung all but one of the songs as well. But it is Gayatri's ‘Hey gayakaa...' that stands out. It has the best tune and the singer's gossamer-like vocals take it to another level.
Well composed
Among the songs that Shahabaz has sung, ‘Manninadiyil…' sounds the best. It has been composed well and has the best lyrics (written by Veeran Kutty) of the album. The works of several lyricists, both up-and-coming and veterans, are featured in the album.
One of the attractions of the album is the famous song, ‘Othupalli…' written by the late P.T. Abdurahiman and made famous by composer K. Raghavan and singer V.T. Murali in the film ‘Thenthulli.' Shahabaz has used the song's original tune composed by Vadakara Krishnadas. And he has sung it with passion; this number evokes nostaliga.
The title track of the album is a revised version of ‘The Soul of Anamika in Black & White,' a song from his earlier album. It retains the same tune but includes new lines, written by Shahabaz himself.
‘Sajnee' may not live quite up to the expectations generated by Shahabaz's last album ‘Alakalkku', but it is undoubtedly a welcome addition to the thin but improving volume of Malayalam ghazals.
